When cahleb and I realized we both had experiences running away from home, we knew we had to make a song together.
“Coffee” is about a rare sense of comfort – “loving the skin I’m in and the mornings we begin with coffee” – despite everything going on outside.

“Boy” plays with the idea of marriage in a queer relationship – do you reject the institution or participate in it?

I wrote HOLDING MY BREATH to capture a personal inflection point: taking a leap of faith, even in a moment of uncertainty.
I hope the lyrics take the shape of whatever you need that little voice in your head to say to you in this moment – a call for a personal change or a political revolution.
For me, it was: “I’m done wading, waiting, holding my breath.”
YELLOWJOY is a response to yellow peril racism and a celebration of Asian American heritage, hardiness, and happiness.
